Three members of law enforcement perished and more than a dozen additional individuals were hurt in an apparently deliberate detonation from gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The explosion took place as police and firefighters went into the residence close to the city of Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were arrested at the location and a third person who escaped following the explosion was located soon after. The trio have been transported to the hospital.

The explosion could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the area revealed the building reduced to a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that efforts had been made to evict the three siblings in the past.

Financial Context

The leader of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, explained the residence was facing an removal notice due to financial obligations incurred by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to talk with the family members who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the siblings set off the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief the police commander told news outlets.

A gas canister had been set off, and the blast directly hit our members,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the residence, the Interior Minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the explosion consisted of eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a emergency responder.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The official thought the explosion had happened on a story above the access point and stated to the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the explosion, he revealed officers had “heard a whistle, likely the gas canisters being activated”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants told local news, noting that the family members had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto joined other government officials in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
